NWPE’s Jeff Wehr and his students have had another amazing year!  Mr. Wehr, Advanced STEM Research and Education teacher at Odessa High School in Washington state, was honored to be selected as the 2016 Teacher of the Year for the Washington State Science and Engineering Fair.  He was also selected as the 2016 Teacher of the Year for the Washington Science Teachers Association.  Additionally, he was selected by the Society for Science and the Public to be a guest panelist for STEM research in education, an event which was held in Washington, DC, on October 1st.  As if that was not enough, Mr. Wehr was recently awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) by President Obama.  The National Science Foundation flew Mr. Wehr and his wife Julie (also an NWPE member) to Washington DC for an incredible week filled with an awards banquet, awards ceremony, and visitation to the White House and Capitol Hill.

jeff wehr 2016As a member of the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society, Mr. Wehr is creating the first high school Virtual Chapter recognizing outstanding teachers and students conducting science and engineering research across the United States. Previously, Sigma Xi Chapters were only National or private research facilities, universities, or colleges.  After revealing to Sigma Xi the level of science research that is happening in high school laboratories across the US, the organization committed to recognizing those teachers and students as well!

Mr. Wehr reports that Odessa’s Advanced STEM Research and Education Program students ended last year with numerous accolades and recognitions but that one student went a bit further than the rest.  Student Stacia Lesser and Mr. Wehr attended the International GENIUS Olympiad in SUNY Oswego, New York where over 69 countries and the United States presented their cutting edge STEM research.  Stacia earned 1st Place (gold medal) in the World.  See Odessa High School student wins prestigious science prize for erosion studies Stacia's STEM success has secured her the honor of being selected as one of the WSU Distinguished Regent's Scholars.

Congratulations to Mr. Wehr and his students for their remarkable achievements and awards!  We are so proud of you!
