NWPE Member Jeffery Wehr Honored

Congratulations to NWPE member Jeffery Wehr, of Odessa, WA, who was featured in a 2008 Spokesman-Review story about the challenges of teaching math and science.  Wehr has been named 2011 Teacher of the Year for Eastern Washington!

A typical student project among Wehr's students includes the one undertaken by Jessica Heimbigner, developing lead-free X-ray shields, which she planned to test at Odessa Memorial Hospital.  “I was thinking of infusing polymers or rubber with some sort of metal,” Heimbigner, who credited Wehr for her love of science, said in the 2008 newspaper story. “But I’m now researching the element bismuth because that’s more cost-effective.”

Wehr is Odessa High School's only science teacher.  Eighty seven percent of his students met state standards for science in 2009 – far above the state average.  In 2008, the U.S. Department of Education named Wehr Washington state's "American Star of Teaching."  NWPE member Angie Dorman, who teaches in Warden, WA, received the same honor in 2006.
