Education Reform Legislation Moves a Step Closer in Idaho
posted by: Cindy Omlin | February 25, 2011, 06:21 PM

Yesterday, lawmakers in the Idaho Senate passed landmark legislation that would phase out tenure, restrict union power, and limit contracts to one year among other components. The legislation passed on a 20-15 vote and is among three bills in the legislature that are set to carry out Superintendent Tom Luna's "Students Come First" education plan.

Despite intimidation efforts and vandalism, Tom Luna's agenda is advancing and gaining support. Some of the components of the bill include, advancing technology in the classroom, requiring online courses, and allowing equal time in front of teachers for organizations providing liability insurance.

While teacher support has been mixed, the bill would be instrumental in allowing choice for educators. With this legislation, school systems would be required to let teachers know about options for professional liability insurance through professional associations like Northwest Professional Educators, an AAE state chapter, ending an unnecessary union information monopoly.

The legislation has been gaining headlines for months as a bold plan that proposes sweeping changes for school systems. Despite the hurdles, Superintendent Luna remained committed to the plan. "This is a great day for Idaho and its children," said Luna. "Next, we must reform Idaho's classrooms so all students learn in a 21st century classroom and are prepared to succeed in the world that awaits them."

Idaho is yet another state passing monumental education reform initiatives. The bill is expected to pass the House next week.

What do you think of this new legislation? Should teachers be presented with other options?
