Using the ‘Netflix’ model to improve literacy

Why is Netflix such a success? I suggest that it comes down to the fulfillment of three desires of the consumer.
  1. On-demand availability
  2. Individualization and recommendation according to consumer preference
  3. Accessibility in a variety of digital formats

Utilizing the same consumer model, Capstone Digital, a division of Capstone Publishing, is taking a leap of faith and producing an innovative educational program called the myON Reader. Their "Netflix" style approach to reading is banking on students' interest being piqued by the same individualized approach, just substitute literature for movies.

While everyone knows that technology has changed our world, policymakers and education experts are still debating the value of social media in the modern day classroom. In a technology driven world, the possibilities of engaging students in social media for educational purposes are endless. However, while we know teenagers are glued to their smart phones and iPads, are they committed to engaging in this technology for school? A new Associated Press-Viacom poll sheds new light on what teens are really using social media for- and you just may be surprised.

 
Seniors Going Strong in the Classroom

In a time when we continually hear about the challenges of maintaining a thriving teacher workforce, the thought of someone teaching until well past typical retirement age seems mindboggling. We are constantly bombarded with headlines and statistics about burn-out rates and shortages, but rarely do we hear success stories about educators who have truly committed their lives to helping students.
 
California Teachers Union Supporting Convicted Cop Killer

While one could find countless examples of teachers unions spending time and money on supporting causes unrelated to education, a California teachers union is under fire this week after passing a new resolution supporting a convicted cop killer from Philadelphia.

It's pretty obvious why Mr. Kevin Grover is Maine's teacher of the year for 2010. He dreams big and then he gets to work.
