Teacher Unions Seek to Foil Janus Decision Before Ruling Even Comes Out

WEA is seeking new laws intended to trap teachers and other government workers into forced union fees even if the Court rules for Janus.

Some of these tactics include:

  • making it harder for teachers to resign union membership and stop paying the union; e.g., force teachers who resign union membership to pay a full year's dues if they miss a a very narrow dues release "window";
  • forcing new employees to sit through a union sales pitch during work hours;
  • prohibiting "rival organizations" such as NWPE from access to work sites and use of facilities; and,
  • forcing districts to provide union leaders with employees' private contact information, while limiting other's ability to reach them.

Consider informing your school board members of union strategies designed to thwart your freedom of speech and association.  Ask them to prioritize teacher rights and the free marketplace of ideas over unseemly union privileges.
