Congratulations to Ms. Catherine Goff, a Kindergarten through 6th grade resource room teacher, at Idaho Arts Charter School, in Nampa, ID.  Ms. Goff’s scholarship will help her attend the 2016 General and Special Education Conference in Seattle, WA, at which she will learn the latest brain-based theories/studies in reading, writing, and math strategies and interventions.

Advocating Teacher Choice at West Ada Listening Session

The West Ada School District Board of Directors conducted its second community listening session on November 30 to hear the characteristics that community members think are important in hiring a new superintendent.  Superintendent Linda Clark’s contract was terminated by the Board on November 9 when it refused her resignation.

Congratulations to Mr. Zach Parker, an NWPE member and high school World History teacher at Sage International School of Boise, a public charter school.  Mr. Parker was recently awarded a $500 Classroom Grant from NWPE, the state’s only non-union professional teacher association.  Brenda Miller, NWPE Regional Director, presented the award at a recent school staff meeting.

Becky Baird, NWPE member and founder of Xavier Charter School in Twin Falls, Idaho, and the Xavier Charter School Board oppose Common Core State Standards. According to an article published in the Times News, Xavier Charter School leaders, although not stating that the standards are bad, don't believe that they "accurately reflect the curriculum and values of the Twin Falls public charter school."

NWPE member Angie Dorman is a historian, an author, and a national awarding winning educator in the small rural town of Warden, WA. Having obtained her Ph.D. in U.S. History from the University of Idaho, Dr. Dorman has since published Martha Gellhorn: Myth, Motif and Remembrance about the 20th century journalist considered one of the “preeminent war correspondents of the century” who was also one of Ernest Hemingway’s many wives.

Jason George Science Teacher Extraordinaire

Congratulations to NWPE member Jason George, a teacher at Vision Charter School in Caldwell, Idaho. Mr. George has been recognized as one of Idaho’s top secondary science educators. According to the Idaho Press Tribune, Mr. George was honored with three other teachers as part of the annual Idaho Science Teachers Conference held in Rexburg, Idaho, last week. NWPE Regional Director Brenda Miller attended the event and honor ceremony held at the Legacy Flight Museum.

Karen Stear Hometown Hero

This summer, NWPE member and Kuna, Idaho, 4th grade teacher Karen Stear was joined by the Kuna post master, two police officers, a paramedic and a fireman to tell their stories to children in the Kuna Library’s Hometown Hero Program.

NWPE Member Reaches Out to Strike Supporters

Judith Camann is a veteran National Board Certificated Exceptional Needs Teacher.  She holds five Washington State teaching certifications in general education, special education and reading as well as two Education Staff Associate certifications.  She has also been deemed highly qualified in five different curriculum areas.  Judy is an NWPE member and union member who opposed the strike by Seattle teachers.  She wrote this statement urging her colleagues not to strike, an action union members approved.  The weeklong strike began September 9.

The Association of American Educators (AAE) recently profiled a number of charter school teachers for National Charter Schools Week, including Northwest Professional Educators member Bill Proser, founder of the nationally acclaimed Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy in Coeur d'Alene, ID, and its longtime honors literature, history, and economics teacher.  This is the second consecutive year that the Charter Academy has been ranked in the top 100 of the most challenging high schools as rated by the Washington Post.  It is the number one performing high school in Idaho.  Bill also serves NWPE’s president of the board of directors.  We appreciate Bill's advocacy and hard work on behalf of student and teacher choice!  Bill gives his insights on charter schools and what motivates him as an educator below.

Meet Lisa Young, NI-STEM Charter Teacher

The Association of American Educators (AAE) recently profiled a number of charter school teachers for National Charter Schools Week, including Northwest Professional Educators member Lisa Young, a fourth-grade math teacher at North Idaho STEM Charter Academy, in Rathdrum, ID.  An NWPE grant winner in 2013, Lisa also recently celebrated receiving a $5,000 grant from the Idaho National Laboratory that will be used for a classroom makeover. Her expanding charter school was the grand prize winner of the ID21 Award receiving a $50,000 grant for its innovative learning style by the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation.  Lisa gives her insights on charter schools and what motivates her as an educator below.

The Association of American Educators (AAE) recently profiled a number of charter school teachers for National Charter Schools Week, including Northwest Professional Educators member Becky Baird, Lead Teacher for Xavier Charter School's Grammar School (K-4).  Becky is a founding teacher of the school which offers a classical education curriculum accented by the fine arts.  Xavier believes that all students benefit from a rigorous, content-rich educational program that develops academic potential and personal character. Classes are taught at honors level, with the expectation that our students are college bound.

Meet Zach Parker, Boise, ID Charter Teacher

The Association of American Educators (AAE) recently profiled a number of charter school teachers for National Charter Schools Week, including Northwest Professional Educators member Zach Parker, High School English and History teacher at Sage International Charter School in Boise, Idaho.   Prior to teaching at Sage, Zach taught at Caldwell High School and Victory Charter High School where he played an extensive role in developing the entire English and History curriculum as well as advising several student clubs/organizations.  Zach gives his insights on charter schools and what motivates him as an educator below.

Congratulations to Jennifer Palmer, 11th-12th grade Math teacher a Madison High School in Rexburg, ID.  Ms. Palmer was recently presented with a $300 teacher scholarship from Northwest Professional Educators by Brenda Miller, Regional Director for Outreach and Membership in Idaho.  Ms. Palmer will use the funds to help pay for her attendance at the July 2015 Intermountain AP Institute in Bountiful, Utah.  The conference is College Board approved and is designed to provide teachers with assistance and guidance to teach AP courses.  Tips are given for refreshing and improving existing AP courses as well as strategies and activities for teaching course content.

Ms. Lisa Stover-Russell, a first grade teacher at East Elementary in Mountain Home School District, was recently awarded a $400 Classroom Grant from Northwest Professional Educators (NWPE). NWPE Regional Director Brenda Miller presented the award at a school staff meeting.  Ms. Stover-Russell will use the funds to purchase four Kindle Fire tablets to differentiate instruction while increasing student engagement.

Michelle Daly Awarded Scholarship

Ms. Michelle Daly, an 8th grade Earth Science teacher at Post Falls Middle School in Post Falls, ID, was recently awarded a $300 professional development scholarship from Northwest Professional Educators (NWPE).  NWPE Regional Director Brenda Miller presented the award at an all school staff meeting.  Ms. Daly will use the funds to attend a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) conference.
