Patricia Donovan-Hopkins Awarded Scholarship

Congratulations to Patricia Donovan-Hopkins, 4th grade teacher at Columbia Valley Gardens Elementary School in Kalama, WA, Longview School District.  She was awarded a $500 scholarship by Brenda Miller, NWPE Regional Director and Lori Porter, NWPE Board Member, at a staff meeting on January 10, 2018.  She will use the scholarship to attend the "Learning and the Brain" conference in New York City, April 19-21, 2018.  The focus of the conference is "The Science of Stress."

Congratulations to Ms. Lee Cornell, teacher of Technology, Filmmaking, and Discovering Cultures and Languages at Victory Middle School in the West Ada School District, Meridian, ID.  Ms. Cornell has been awarded a $500 scholarship to attend the Northwest Council for Computer Education to be held in Seattle, WA, Feb 14-16, 2018.  The award was presented by Brenda Miller, NWPE regional director.

Independence Voice Key to NWPE Scholarship Winner

Congratulations to NWPE member Tanya McAtee, grades six and eight science and social studies teacher at St. Paul’s Academy in Bellingham, WA.  Ms. McAtee has been awarded a $470 NWPE scholarship to attend the National Science Teachers Association’s annual conference where she focused on middle school instructional strategies to integrate the three strands of New Generation Science Standards (NGSS) through inquiry-based science instruction.

Congratulations to Karen Lyle of Davenport School District, who was recently awarded a $500 Teacher Scholarship to attend the Ron Clark Academy.  Ms. Lyle, a ten year member of NWPE, shared that she appreciates having options. “NWPE has helped me many times over the years, and my Board is supportive of choice.”  NWPE Regional Director Brenda Miller presented her award at a school staff meeting on April 25.

Congratulations to Ms. Catherine Goff, a Kindergarten through 6th grade resource room teacher, at Idaho Arts Charter School, in Nampa, ID.  Ms. Goff’s scholarship will help her attend the 2016 General and Special Education Conference in Seattle, WA, at which she will learn the latest brain-based theories/studies in reading, writing, and math strategies and interventions.

Congratulations to Jennifer Palmer, 11th-12th grade Math teacher a Madison High School in Rexburg, ID.  Ms. Palmer was recently presented with a $300 teacher scholarship from Northwest Professional Educators by Brenda Miller, Regional Director for Outreach and Membership in Idaho.  Ms. Palmer will use the funds to help pay for her attendance at the July 2015 Intermountain AP Institute in Bountiful, Utah.  The conference is College Board approved and is designed to provide teachers with assistance and guidance to teach AP courses.  Tips are given for refreshing and improving existing AP courses as well as strategies and activities for teaching course content.

Michelle Daly Awarded Scholarship

Ms. Michelle Daly, an 8th grade Earth Science teacher at Post Falls Middle School in Post Falls, ID, was recently awarded a $300 professional development scholarship from Northwest Professional Educators (NWPE).  NWPE Regional Director Brenda Miller presented the award at an all school staff meeting.  Ms. Daly will use the funds to attend a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) conference.

Idaho Hosts Common Core Education Event

Idahoans for Local Education (I4LE) is a group working to advance local control in Idaho's education system and stopping Common Core State Standards.  I4LE wants to preserve Idaho’s local educational sovereignty by keeping educational decision making close to home, where parents can make a difference.  It also works to ensure that Idaho‘s education system has the highest standards so students are given the ability to be anyone they want to be.  To this end, I4LE is sponsoring an event hosting Dr. Peg Luksik addressing "Common Core, SBAC Tests & The Truth."

Vallivue Math Teacher Wins Scholarship

Congratulations to Mr. Chris Best, an NWPE member and math teacher at Vallivue High School in Caldwell, ID.  Mr. Best was awarded a $300 scholarship from Northwest Professional Educators (NWPE) by Ms. Leah Guelker, NWPE representative, at an April 8 staff meeting.  Mr. Best will utilize the funds to attend the Foundation for Teaching Economics Institute on Environment and Economics this summer.  According to Mr. Best, “Many students are interested in environmental issues. This Institute will provide me with an array of issues to use with my AP Statistics students as well as my Geometry students and provide me with classroom activities that I can tailor to my students needs.”

Rachel Rojas Wins $500 Teacher Scholarship

Heather Marr, Boise, ID, Teacher Wins NWPE Scholarship

Congratulations to Heather Marr, a Boise High School Student Council, English, and Advanced Placement Literature teacher in Boise, ID, who has been awarded a $500 scholarship from Northwest Professional Educators (NWPE).  Ms. Leah Guelker, NWPE representative, presented the award at a Language Arts Department meeting.  Ms. Marr will utilize the funds to attend and present at the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) conference in Boston, MA.  Her presentation will focus on how to engage reluctant readers and writers in middle school using stereotype analysis which focuses on teen interests while working to explode misconceptions and helping teens gain a sense of personal and community identity.  She will demonstrate how teachers can interact effectively and respectfully with struggling students while incorporating the new Common Core State Standards in a meaningful and rigorous way.

Ms. Mary Thompson, a K-8 math teacher for Idaho Distance Education Academy, has received a $200 scholarship award from Northwest Professional Educators (NWPE), the state’s only non-union professional teacher association.  Ms. Thompson’s scholarship will fund a course called "Teaching Elementary Math Conceptually" through Northwest Nazarene University this spring.  She notes that, “This will help me better teach the parents and students I work with to understand math in a mental, conceptual way and to better transition into the Common Core Standards and new assessments.”

We are proud to announce that Leora White, an NWPE member in Nampa School District, Idaho, has been honored with a $200 NWPE scholarship award to attend and present at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics conference in Denver, CO, this April.  Leora, a math teacher at Lone Star Middle School in Nampa, stated that the conference will help with implementation of the Idaho State Common Core Standards and raise student achievement in areas identified as needing improvement.  Mrs. Brenda Miller, an NWPE member representative, awarded the grant at an 8th grade assembly.
