Ms. Mary Thompson, a K-8 math teacher for Idaho Distance Education Academy, has received a $200 scholarship award from Northwest Professional Educators (NWPE), the state’s only non-union professional teacher association.  Ms. Thompson’s scholarship will fund a course called "Teaching Elementary Math Conceptually" through Northwest Nazarene University this spring.  She notes that, “This will help me better teach the parents and students I work with to understand math in a mental, conceptual way and to better transition into the Common Core Standards and new assessments.”

mary thompson“Northwest Professional Educators is happy to provide this award to Mary to enhance her professional development and student learning,” said Cindy Omlin, NWPE Executive Director.  “NWPE is proud to reward educators for their hard work and creativity in the classroom.  The award is certainly well-deserved as Ms. Thompson seeks ways to increase student achievement.”

NWPE supports educators like Mary who believe in being held to very high standards of professionalism.  “Along with the code of ethics that every teacher should abide by, I believe that there should be added ethics over time as new technology enters the picture,” she wrote in her application.  “We live in an electronic age, and while this can have a huge impact on our daily lives in a very positive way, it can also have quite a negative impact as well.  I believe that teachers need to be good role models for the proper timing and usage of technology (cell phones, computers, etc.) and should hold students to a higher standard in this regard.  I believe this will raise the professionalism among educators, and will enhance respect for education as a whole.”

Congratulations to Mary and thanks for advancing best teaching practices and teacher professionalism!
