Along with the numerous coaltion partners such as the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation, Idaho Coalition of Charter School Families, the Idaho Charter School Network, Idaho Business for Education and the Idaho Federation of Independent Schools, and others, Northwest Professional Educators' (NWPE) Brenda Miller helped plan one of the premiere National School Choice Week (NSCW) events in the country.

scw march 2015Brenda, NWPE Regional Director for Idaho, and coaltion partners organized an energetic rally of 1,000 students, parents, educators, legislators and other supporters January 27 on the steps of the state capitol in Boise, ID.  The rally began with a march from the Basque Center to the capitol and included a rousing flash mob  of the NSCW dance. Students from twelve schools received the SCW dance training from Melissa Sunshine prior to the march.

Idaho Education News reported that Idaho was recognized by a National School Choice Week committee as one of the top 15 states for providing students with education options. The national movement honored Idaho since its educational opportunities include public, charter, private, parochial, virtual and home schools.

Northwest Professional Educators also offered a raffle for a free luncheon to one of the schools of choice participating in the NSCW rally.  The Academy at Roosevelt Center (ARC) won the prize and Brenda will be hosting their luncheon this month.

Idaho Governor C.L. "Butch" Otter signed a proclamation  honoring not only student choice, but teacher choice as well.  It was the first proclamation of its kind during a National School Choice Week celebration.

Teachers, students and parents were invited to make posters with personal statements about why choice is important to them.

"So many families benefit from education options in Idaho every day," said Brenda remarked.  "We're glad to bring some of them together to celebrate the difference school choice is making for children."
