Congressional Hearing Investigates the Strengths and Weaknesses of the Institute of Education Sciences

The information from IES helps parents make decisions about their children’s learning experience, provides taxpayers valuable data about the federal investment in education, and allows state and local education officials to use the research to identify and implement successful instructional programs, curriculum, and school improvement strategies.

However, while IES’s many positive contributions to improving education, it still needs improvements. Critics argue the organization should be more transparent and open to the public.

Dr. Kemple, Executive Director of New York City Public Schools, emphasized the merit of IES, but added improving IES, “ is a challenging feat. Education has a wide rang of stakeholder to address. Each groups needs different kinds of information and in different forms."

Ms. Kathy Christie, Vice Presidents, Knowledge/Information & Dissemination Education Commission of the States, agreed with Dr. Kemple, adding that the communication and dissemination of IES’s findings to schools, professional development organizations, and schools of education leaves much to be desired.

All witnesses
concurred with the merit of a bi-partisan, non-biased, government regulated establishment, which provides a basis for federal policies, evaluations, etc, but concluded that work to improve IES must continue.
