This includes communication via cell phones, email, and social media. The idea behind this legislation is to create a safe learning environment and clear expectations between students and staff. The policy states that “what is private in the digital world often has the possibility of becoming public even without their knowledge or consent.” While many teachers want to reach out to students through the platforms that their students use most, the fact remains that text and social media messaging is one of the riskiest things you can do as a teacher as it can often be construed as inappropriate communication even with the most innocent of intentions. It’s for reasons like this that teachers should stay protected with personal liability insurance.
