Congratulations to Ms. Sarah Turner, a 2nd-4th grade teacher at Blackfoot Charter Community Learning Center in Blackfoot, ID, on her $500 Classroom Grant from Northwest Professional Educators (NWPE), the state’s only non-union professional teacher association. Ms. Kelly Jo Fisk, NWPE member, presented the grant at a staff meeting. The award will fund the purchase of math manipulatives such as base-10 blocks and fraction tiles.

sarah turner kelly jo fiskMs. Turner’s award is certainly well-deserved as she seeks ways to increase student achievement.  Northwest Professional Educators is proud to reward educators for their hard work and creativity in the classroom.

NWPE appreciates Ms. Turner’s dedication to student achievement and improving the professionalism of educators.  According to Ms. Turner, a key to improving professionalism is “interactions with parents, teachers from other schools, and community members.”  She believes that as educators are more respectful of those around them, they will be respected more. And, although she sees it as unrealistic (but effective and entertaining), she believes that community members would respect teachers more if they were substitute teachers for at least one day.  Ms. Turner advocates that teachers “need to be knowledgeable, well trained, and friendly,” i.e., “masters in our field which requires that we research how students learn best and incorporate that research into our teaching style.”
