Congratulations to NWPE member Jean Robinson, Earth Science teacher at Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy, and her middle school ExploraVision team! Jean led her middle school students to win the Region 6 competition of the 2014 Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision program, the world's largest K-12 science competition. The students' project could lead to a potential scientific and medical breakthrough for the treatment of migraine headaches.
The invention works to detect migraines before they begin and attempts to stop or treat them before they interfere with daily life. The device sits gently behind the ear, and works similar to an ultrasound by sending out sound waves throughout the head. The device receives an image and then deducts whether there has been a change in blood vessel size, which signals the onset of a migraine. A needle injects anti-inflammatories such as magnesium and riboflavin into the ear, reducing the pain in time for the migraine to heal.
