This morning, Rep. Virginia Foxx was at AEI speaking about the importance of career and technical education. She’s not the only one. This once demeaned field is getting new life in the 21st century, fueled by increasing reports of a skills/jobs mismatch. In other words, there are great jobs out there for students with a high school or associates degree in technical fields, however there aren’t enough people with the skills needed to fill all of those jobs.
Many schools and districts are attempting to fill that gap by revitalizing their career and technical programs. Read on below to see what districts across the country are doing to breathe new life into CTE.

Everyone knows the feeling of getting a song stuck in your head. There’s just something about the right mix of lyrics and melody that stays with us, which is why research shows that using songs in the classroom can be such a powerful pedagogical tool. Studies have shown benefits in using music to help teach reading and promote spatial reasoning. There have also been numerous studies that have tied the use of music to an increased ability to recall facts and/or text.

Congratulations to Nerissa Armstrong who receives a $500 NWPE Scholarship to attend the 2017 National Council for the Social Studies Conference in San Francisco next fall. Ms. Armstrong is a Meridian Middle School teacher of World Civilizations in the West Ada School District in Meridian, Idaho.

Congratulations to Ms. Emily Ball, 3rd and 4th grade Language Arts, Science, Social Studies teacher at the Idaho Arts Charter School in Nampa, Idaho! She has been awarded a $500 grant to enhance her Engage New York curriculum. She will use the funds to purchase additional books which will help her students develop their fluency, comprehension, and reading stamina skills through hands-on reading practice.
