Public Opinion Poll: Americans Want to See Cuts to Education Budgets

According to a new survey conducted by the Thomas B. Fordham Institute, many Americans support dramatic changes to how school districts fund staff and programs as the primary solution to budget deficits.

According to the data, 62% of respondents described their local district's current financial situation as "very or somewhat difficult," with 77% of these individuals explaining that they see current budget woes as the new financial reality.

Department of Education Announces August is "Connected Educators Month"

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has
announced August 2012 is "Connected Educator Month," a month-long exploration and celebration of online communities and networks dedicated to broadening and deepening educator participation in learning and sharing. The push toward connecting through technology is designed to bring online community and education leaders together to move towards a more fully connected and collaborative profession.

Public Charter Schools Offer Option to Native American Students

According to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, there are a total of 566 federally recognized American Indian and Alaska Native tribes and villages. The students of these communities are educated in a range of urban and rural settings and student performance is traditionally tracked as much lower than their peers. In an effort to improve academic outcomes and maintain ties to Native culture and language, the flexible environments of public charter schools are considered the key to success for these students.
