No Child Left Behind Overhaul Activity in Congress

While lawmakers continue to propose legislation for the reauthorization of No Child Left Behind (NCLB), none of the measures have managed to gain bipartisan support. Experts agree that despite these new proposals, NCLB will most likely not be reauthorized this year. In typical fashion, Republicans and Democrats cannot agree on the federal government's role in school accountability.

Congratulations to NWPE members Linda Bruner and Keith Neuberger who received recognition by the Lakeland School District as this year's top educators.  Both math teachers, Ms. Bruner was honored as the district's Teacher of the Year and Mr. Neuberger was honored as Timberlake Junior High School's Teacher of the Year at a district awards banquet at the Coeur d'Alene Resort.

Summer is traditionally the education conference busy season. After all, this is when most teachers are freed from the responsibilities of the classroom and are thinking about new plans and techniques for the upcoming year. As tempting as it may seem to just spend your summer flitting from one conference to the next, it's neither practical nor affordable.

Philadelphia Teachers Feel the Pinch of Budget Cuts

As reported on the AAE Blog, there is a pension crisis brewing across the country. In large cities including Milwaukee, Cleveland, and Philadelphia, law makers are struggling to find long term solutions to chronically underfunded pension and benefit accounts. As previously stated, Milwaukee and Cleveland have devised plans to spread the burden of teacher pensions on taxpayers, teachers, and the school districts, while Philadelphia has yet to come up with a feasible plan. Due to inactivity, teachers across the city were laid off this week due to budget cuts.

Congratulations to Mr. Matt Elven, NWPE member and math and economics teacher at Grangeville High School in Grangeville, ID.  Matt was awarded $5,000 from Smartsheet.com Inc., a fast-growing online collaboration provider.  Smartsheet.com awarded $25,000 in excellence in the classroom awards to five Idaho high school math and English teachers based on student nominations of teachers for making a positive impact on students’ lives.
