AAE Celebrates Educators & Charter Schools This Week

This week, May 5-11, 2013, is both National Teacher Appreciation Week and National Charter Schools Week. AAE is pleased to recognize inspiring educators and to celebrate the growing national public charter school movement, this week and every week.

 
Stranger Than Fiction: New York School Goes Meatless

It's out with the chicken nuggets, fries, and burgers, and in with the tofu, black beans, and veggies for Public School 244, in Flushing, New York. Opened in 2008, this school was founded on linking academics to a healthy lifestyle. It is now making headlines for going completely vegetarian.

"Reform 2.0" in the Nation’s Capital

Washington, D.C. Councilmember David Catania recently became head of the Committee on Education in the District. He plans to use his new position to implement "Reform 2.0," a roadmap that includes money for low income students, specific attention to those at risk of dropping out, and a revamp of vocational programs. Schools in our Nation's Capital are often considered some of the poorest performing in the country. Mr. Catania designed his initiatives to combat issues facing all urban school districts.

 
Annette Lutes, NWPE Member, Wins NWPE Grant

Ms. Annette Lutes, an NWPE member and 8-12th grade special education teacher at Black Canyon High School, has been awarded a $200 classroom grant from Northwest Professional Educators.  Mrs. Brenda Miller, an NWPE representative, presented the grant at a school staff meeting.  The grant will be used to help fund an iPad be used with a student who needs it for a communication device.  Annette stated that the technology will be shared through integrated activities that include general education students and special education students within a collaborative teaching setting.
