AAE Utah Celebrates Teachers

While Teacher Appreciation Week has come and gone, it is never too late to celebrate teachers and their many contributions to communities across the country. Last week, AAE-Utah Membership Director Charity Smith celebrated the history of teaching in Utah by leading a walking field trip for students, teachers, and community members.
 
California Company Offers Free Teaching Courses for K-12 Education

Yesterday, Edweek published  an insightful article citing new trends in low-cost professional development courses. As professional development opportunities continue to expand via online platforms, "MOOC's" (massively open online courses) are now being offered to K-12 educators. Silicon Valley company Coursera recently partnered with seven universities to provide 28 free courses, with topics ranging from biology and literacy to lessons on how to structure classes and survive the first year of teaching.

Are AP Classes Worth It?

As higher education becomes increasingly competitive and expensive, students often opt to take Advance Placement (AP) classes in high school to obtain an edge. These classes allow students to earn college credit via a rigorous standardized test and high-level course. Since the program’s inception in 1955 the AP program has claimed to narrow the achievement gap, prepare students for college, and give students a head start on college credits.

The ability to work in groups and collaborate is one of those 21st century skills that teachers try to instill alongside all the other curriculum necessities.  It is also a skill that teachers constantly struggle to pass on to their students.  It is not an impossible task, however.  Consider these methods for building collaboration in your classroom:
