NEA Gives More Than $15 Million to Advocacy Groups and Partisan Politics

A recent report by the Education Intelligence Agency sheds light on the financial disclosures of the National Education Association in the 2011-2012 fiscal year. The analysis reveals that the NEA spent over $15 million dollars of member dues on a wide array of left-leaning advocacy groups and charities. 
 
Creating your own online Professional Learning Community

For all the research out there pointing to the benefits of having school-wide Professional Learning Communities or PLCs, the fact remains that many schools still operate in such a way that isolates their teachers instead of inviting collaboration.  Teachers in this type of environment are not left without options for forming an effective PLC.

 
The Benefits of Arts Integration

Even as arts programs are increasingly falling under the axe of limited school budgets, teachers are increasingly integrating arts into the core subject areas.  The concept behind arts integration is nothing new. Teachers have been having students build models, perform plays, sing songs, and complete other various arts activities for years.  Now there is a growing body of evidence to support those practices. 

 
AAE Staff Attends Department of Education Inaugural Open House

In honor of the 2013 Presidential Inauguration, AAE staff attended the U.S. Department of Education Open House last week. The event was hosted by Department of Education staff and was conducted in an effort to engage the education community and showcase various goals for President Obama's second term. 

 
Blogging for Authentic Writing

Last summer, Martha Payne made international news when her local government took steps intended to shut down her blog.  What spread this story so far is the fact that Martha is 9 years old and her blog, NeverSeconds, was designed to criticize her school lunches.  Her blog quickly gained an international audience and students around the world started to send Martha pictures of their lunches as a way to complain.  When news broke that the school had told Martha to stop and that the local government had even passed a law prohibiting photography in school cafeterias, there was a quick upsurge of support until the school and local government backed down and Martha was able to blog again.
