2012 National Teacher of the Year Promotes Professionalism

Out of Burbank, California emerges a true gem in the teaching profession. Rebecca Mielwocki, the 2012 National Teacher of Year, has been speaking out about education reform and her vision for the teaching profession since being awarded the prestigious title in the spring. Mielwocki, a 7th grade science teacher, recently shared her opinions and teaching philosophy in an interview with Education Week.

It usually starts about now.  Many of my friends post on Facebook and send  emails about how I WILL NOT see them until December.  Several friends  will put countdowns on their Facebook pages which, once November 1st hits, they’ll update frequently and in detail.  All of November, I’ll see posts like: “Wrote 1,274 words tonight, 35,862 more to go!  Female protagonist is taking a turn I didn’t expect!”  It gets worse when I try to invite one of these friends to the movies. The response I get is something like, “No, sorry, I have 10,000 words left and there’s only a week to go!”

The Most Effective Professional Development: Professional Learning Communities

While there is still a lot of emphasis placed on teacher’s pursuing traditional professional development, there is more and more evidence that for a teacher looking to perfect their craft, the answer may not lie in traditional workshops or conferences but instead within Professional  Learning Communities (PLCs).

Congress to Face Uncertainty after November Election


With the November election just weeks away, a newly-elected Congress will undoubtedly face gridlock over education issues such as No Child Left Behind (NCLB) reauthorization and dire budget realities. Experts contend that regardless of who wins both presidential and congressional elections, federal officials will face difficult roadblocks in 2013.
