The 2012 Election: The Education Impact

The votes are in and the people have spoken. President Obama's re-election means four more years of unprecedented federal education spending and education reform-minded competitive grants. As the dust settles on the 2012 election, experts arepredicting a continuation of an active Department of Education and changes to some controversial state education laws.

I've always learned the most about teaching by watching more experienced teachers in action. That's why one of my favorite resources is a website called the Teaching Channel, a relatively new entry to teacher-resource websites. The Teaching Channel is not the first, and probably not the last, site that came up with the idea of providing teachers virtual professional development, but it is among the highest quality. Best of all, it's FREE!

 
U.S. Department of the Treasury’s “Save Out Loud” Contest Calls for Students’ Savings Stories

Do you know a student with a savings story to share? Are you teaching financial literacy in your classroom? The U.S. Department of the Treasury is calling for entries to its "Save Out Loud" Contest through the "Ready.Save.Grow." initiative. "Save Out Loud" is a photo and video essay contest for students in grades K – 12. Grand prize winners get a virtual visit to their classrooms from the United States Treasurer Rosie Rios. 

 
New Poll: Georgia Charter School Amendment Too Close to Call

With the general election just days away, Georgia continues to be in the spotlight about a charter school amendment to the state's constitution, also known as Amendment One. According to a new poll, the public is still split on the issue, which would create a state board that would approve public charter school applications. This new provision would allow charter schools to bypass local school boards, which often oppose public charter schools, in an effort to best facilitate school choice for Georgia's students and teachers.

Education has been a consistent theme in the 2012 presidential campaign. Although each candidate offers a different solution to improving America's education system, both President Obama and Governor Romney acknowledge that education reform is a critical part of their political platform. Regardless of the outcome next week, it is clear that the 2012 election will have a lasting impact on federal spending and K-12 education for years to come.
