Congratulations to NWPE member Jennie Lilya, kindergarten teacher at Blackfoot Charter Community Learning Center (BCCLC) in Blackfoot, Idaho!  Ms. Lilya has been awarded a $350 classroom grant to purchase a Fairy Tales STEAM Kit which combines classic stories with hands-on STEM and literacy activities for the school's kindergarten program.

jennie lilya 12-2-2016The BCCLC kindergarten program consists of 4 classrooms.  The STEAM kit will provide fun and engaging materials for their small group rotations. The materials will introduce STEM concepts that the students will carry with them throughout their school years.

Ms. Lilya’s best idea for raising the professionalism of teaching as a career is collaboration.   “Teachers need to be willing to work together to help students succeed. When teachers are willing to work together and respect each other as professionals that enhances respect for the profession.”

Ms. Lilya is a new teacher this year, but worked as a paraprofessional for three years while she was going through school.  She heard about NWPE through a co-worker years ago and then again at a staff meeting last spring.  She wanted to purchase insurance and was drawn to NWPE because it provided her a choice for protection at a low cost. “I have sent my own kids to a charter school because I believe parents should have a choice in where their children go to school.  I have the same thoughts about the professional organizations I join. It should all be a choice.”

NWPE is proud that Ms. Lilya chose teaching as a career and NWPE as her professional association!
