The Teacher Gender Gap
posted by: Cindy Omlin | June 12, 2012, 04:41 pm

According to the most recent population survey released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor, the teaching gender gap is still alive and well. Male educators constitute just 2.3% of pre-K and kindergarten teachers, 18.3% of the elementary and middle school teacher population, and 42% of the high school level teaching staff.  These numbers are down from 2007, but suggest a clear female majority in the teaching profession, especially in the earlier grades.

The possibilities are endless and teachers are taking advantage of this accessibility. However, as authors and publishers come to terms with this new reality and its impact on profits, education stakeholders are sounding off on how to best share information and protect intellectual property.

This week's recall election has thrust union special interests and teacher freedoms back into the national dialogue like never before. After a bitter campaign and an estimated $60 million spent on election efforts, the commanding win for Governor Walker illustrates an overwhelming shift in public opinion against teachers unions. As the dust settles on this historic election, it's no coincidence that according to a new public opinion poll, teacher unions nationally are reaching all-time low approval levels.

Report: Fairer Funding for Charters Can Lead to Stronger Oversight
posted by: Cindy Omlin | June 08, 2012, 08:01 pm

In less than 20 years, public charter schools have grown from a novel educational experiment into an integral part of the education reform movement. While growth is impressive, effective policy that balances the demand for expansion and funding with the need for educational excellence is a constant challenge. With several Southern states rewriting their laws to foster charter school growth in recent years, a new report by the Southern Regional Education Board recommends policies that ensure academic quality and sufficient public funding.
