Battling Germs and Staying Healthy

According to a recent survey comparing the overall health and well-being of eleven different professions, teachers were ranked the highest in terms of overall quality of life.  The distinguishing factor that helped to give teachers the happiness edge appears to be rooted in perspective – teachers regard their job as a “calling” and not just a gig that pays the bills.
Despite the inherent satisfaction that comes from the call to teach, teachers are in the trenches every day and are extremely vulnerable to catching some horribly mutated bacterial infection spawned in the deep, dark underworld of student fingernails.  Germs are everywhere, and one would think that teachers are the most vulnerable.

 
The Debate over Authorizing Charter Schools

After an eventful legislative session, the debate over who should authorize new public charter schools has re-emerged in several key states across the country. Hailed as an issue "as old as charters themselves," the push and pull between state and local stakeholders continues to create setbacks in continued public charter school growth.

 
Single-sex Education in Public Schools

Single-sex education (teaching males and females in separate classrooms or schools) is an old approach to instruction that has been gaining new momentum in the education reform era. Although the practice has long existed in many private schools, it's a relatively new option for traditional public schools and charter schools. Now that over 500 public schools offer some form of single-sex education, experts are renewing the debate over the value of separating boys and girls in the classroom.

 
Michigan Leads the Way with Cyber Charter School Law

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder made national headlines this month by signing into law a progressive piece of legislation designed to greatly expand online charter schools in the state. The law will lift caps on virtual charter schools and allow students on waiting lists the opportunity to dual-enroll in both high school classes and online college courses.

 
School Choice and Charter Schools Become Presidential Campaign Issues

Last week both President Obama and Governor Romney turned their attention to the growing education crisis in the United States, signaling a new focus on education reform and school choice as emerging campaign issues. On Monday, the Obama administration announced a new round of Race to the Top competitive grants, and in several high-profile speeches, Governor Mitt Romney outlined his potential education plans to the electorate with a strong focus on school choice and charter schools.
