Four Great Books for Teaching Grammar

For many writing teachers, grammar is the bane of their existence. Questions abound about how best to teach it. Should time be spent diagramming sentences? Should you teach rules at all? If you don’t teach rules, how do you explain to your students why a sentence doesn’t mean what they think it does?

Most teachers like to envision their classroom as a place where curiosity flows and students are allowed to pursue their own interests and drive their own learning. In reality, though, there is a state-mandated curriculum that must be taught and even if there wasn’t, the limits of time dictate that the personal desires of the students sometimes need to be set aside so that students can learn what is expected of them.

 
Mari Harris Named 2017 Idaho History Teacher of the Year

Mari Harris, a teacher and NWPE member at Vallivue High School, has been named the 2017 Idaho History Teacher of the Year, an award presented annually by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to K-12 American history education.

Resources for Backwards Planning

When it comes to planning lessons and units, backwards planning is considered the gold standard. This philosophy of planning is explained in great detail in Understanding by Design, the seminal work by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe. The book lays out the philosophy behind backwards designing and goes into great detail on how teachers can implement this type of lesson planning, melding it with a philosophy of lesson planning that encourages students and teachers alike to think about the essential questions in the curriculum.
