Idaho Distance Education Academy Teacher Wins NWPE Scholarship Award

Ms. Mary Thompson, a K-8 math teacher for Idaho Distance Education Academy, has received a $200 scholarship award from Northwest Professional Educators (NWPE), the state’s only non-union professional teacher association.  Ms. Thompson’s scholarship will fund a course called "Teaching Elementary Math Conceptually" through Northwest Nazarene University this spring.  She notes that, “This will help me better teach the parents and students I work with to understand math in a mental, conceptual way and to better transition into the Common Core Standards and new assessments.”

Colleen Thomson, NWPE member at North Idaho STEM Charter Academy, wins NWPE grant

Congratulations to Mrs. Colleen Thomson, Director of Instruction at North Idaho STEM Charter Academy, and the school team of 4th, 5th, and 6th grade teachers, who have been awarded a $250 classroom grant from Northwest Professional Educators (NWPE).  The grant will be used to take 4th, 5th & 6th grade students to compete in the Idaho Tech: NASA Space Consortium Mars Rover Competition at the University of Idaho on April 26th.

 
Eric Lichte, NWPE Member, Receives NWPE Grant

We are proud to announce that Mr. Eric Lichte, an NWPE member and life skills teacher of 18-21 year old students at Gateway PREP in Nampa, ID, received a $250 classroom grant to build work/potting benches for the PREP Greenhouse which will serve as student workstations to prepare potting plants and manage tools.  Mr. Lichte noted, “The opportunity to work in a greenhouse not only develops skills but also provides experience for potential employment after the completion of the program. The greenhouse is an interactive classroom that not only teaches students but also teaches the community the capabilities of the students.”  Mrs. Brenda Miller presented the grant at a teacher staff meeting.

 
Leora White, NWPE Member, Receives NWPE Scholarship

We are proud to announce that Leora White, an NWPE member in Nampa School District, Idaho, has been honored with a $200 NWPE scholarship award to attend and present at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics conference in Denver, CO, this April.  Leora, a math teacher at Lone Star Middle School in Nampa, stated that the conference will help with implementation of the Idaho State Common Core Standards and raise student achievement in areas identified as needing improvement.  Mrs. Brenda Miller, an NWPE member representative, awarded the grant at an 8
th grade assembly.
