According to the U.S. Census Bureau, racial minorities are expected to be the majority by 2050. This historic shift is already being felt in our nation's schools as close to half of all children under age 5 are classified as racial or ethnic minorities. Despite these changing demographics, a recent study by American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, found that 82% of teachers receiving education degrees in the last two years were white.

Congress Takes Action on Special Education Funding
In light of the recession, several states have attempted to cut their spending on special education programs. However, Congress has curtailed this practice by cutting federal funding for states that spend less than they spent last year on special education initiatives.

Digital Learning Now! (DLN) recently released the 2012 Digital Learning Report Card, a measurement of effective digital learning practices in all 50 states. The report highlights both recent advancements in digital learning and calls for states to modernize public education for the next generation of learners.

Congratulations to NWPE member Laura Sebastiani, a first grade teacher at Fisher Elementary School, in Lynden, WA. Laura has been awarded a $250 New Classroom Start-Up Grant to enhance her classroom library and draw students into a life-long love for reading. Mrs. Sebastiani plans to purchase a variety of new fiction and non-fiction books, a cozy carpet, pillows, and lighting. "I want our classroom library to be a special place where we can learn, dream and be taken away to far off places,” she wrote in her application.
