Tips for Teaching Introverted Students

A few weeks ago, an article in The Atlantic made a bit of a stir.  Written by a teacher, the article argued that participation grades should be part of a teaching structure as a way to teach introverts to be more outspoken and to speak their minds.  The author, Jessica Lahey, reasons that it is a teacher’s responsibility to teach students how to succeed in the world, which means teaching introverts to “self-advocate” and not to be “intimidated” by the world around them.

Post Falls Idaho Special Education Teacher Wins NWPE New Classroom Grant

Congratulations to Katie Kirkbride, a special education and life skills teacher at Prairie View Elementary School in the Post Falls School District in Idaho.  Katie was presented with a $250 New Classroom Start-Up Grant from Northwest Professional Educators to purchase computer software to help her self-contained special education students develop pre-academic and academic skills and adaptive software to assist students with limited motor skills.  NWPE Executive Director Cindy Omlin presented the award to Ms. Kirkbride at a staff meeting on Thursday, February 28, 2013.

 
Textbook Publishers Shift toward Digital Resources

Teachers in the classroom today all remember being issued their textbooks in grade school year after year. Immediately outdated content accompanied by the occasional pencil drawing have been standard issue for generations. With the dawn of new technologies, textbook publishers are rushing to meet the needs of a new generation of students.

 
Building Your Own Professional Learning Community: What Websites to Use

One of the things that stood out among the data released in the recent MetLife survey, was that teachers who collaborate professionally with other teachers are more likely to seek out leadership roles and are more likely to be satisfied with their position.  This information points out yet another reason that having a high-quality professional learning community (PLC) is essential to teaching.
