Gateways to Better Education (GTBE) has provided information and resources to help teachers educate their students about the much beloved Saint Patrick.  Did you know that he was the first person in history to write against slavery? His Christian faith and personal experience led him to condemn the practice according to historian Thomas Cahill, author of the book, How the Irish Saved Civilization..  After being kidnapped from Britain at the age of 16, he served as a Celtic slave for six years until he escaped and returned home.
 
Religious Objectors Answer the Call

Northwest Professional Educators (NWPE) recently put out a call to our Washington state members to testify in support of a Washington state Religious Objection Process Rights bill designed to make it easier for those objecting to mandatory union dues because of personal religious beliefs to send their representation fees to the charity of their choice.

 
Book Study: Why Don't Students Like School?

Northwest Professional Educators is partnering with TeachIdaho for a book study on "Why Don't Students Like School?" by

Daniel Willingham.  The book study is designed for the participant to learn easy-to-apply, scientifically-based approaches for engaging students in the classroom.
 
School Choice Week Partnership Leads to Energizing Rally for Choice

Along with the numerous coaltion partners such as the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation, Idaho Coalition of Charter School Families, the Idaho Charter School Network, Idaho Business for Education and the Idaho Federation of Independent Schools, and others, Northwest Professional Educators' (NWPE) Brenda Miller helped plan one of the premiere National School Choice Week (NSCW) events in the country.

 
Reflection leads to transformation for former union leader

NWPE Regional Director Brenda Miller, a former teacher union and PTA leader, recently shared how reflection on what is best for her own children and that of other families led her from a strict adherence to supporting the status quo to being a strong advocate for student and teacher choice.  Read about her journey in this guest column published in the Idaho Statesman  during National School Choice Week.
