Single-Sex Classrooms in 2014

In an effort to remove distractions and enhance learning, several Washington, D.C. area public schools are
experimenting with classes by separating boys and girls into single-sex learning environments. The practice is becoming a new trend in education reform.

NWPE member Justin Grillo is quite the leader!  Justin was instrumental in bringing the "The Leader In Me" program, based on Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, to his small rural school district in Waterville, WA.

 
Research Roundup: Kindergarten, Extended Class Time, Sports and More

Education researchers has been busy the past few months with new studies that explore the effects of kindergarten, single-gender classes, and extended school time, along with the effects of teacher assistants, sports, bullying, and more.  We’ve outlined some of the most interesting research below:

 
North Idaho STEM to expand

Congratulations to North Idaho STEM Charter Academy founders and NWPE members, Scott and Colleen Thomson, whose school has been approved to expand from K-8 to high school grades.  A grand prize winner of the ID21 Award, the school received a $50,000 grant for its innovative learning style by the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation.  The school is featured in this winner’s video.

 
PD Mindset Book Study

TeachIdaho and NWPE are partnering to offer an eight-week book study on renowned Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck's book Mindset. Teachers will have the opportunity to read and discuss the book in which Dweck discusses how ability and talent are only one small piece of success.  It is our mindset that truly determines success, she believes. With the right mindset, teachers can motivate students to achieve greater success not only in school, but also in life.
