Vallivue Math Teacher Wins Scholarship

Congratulations to Mr. Chris Best, an NWPE member and math teacher at Vallivue High School in Caldwell, ID.  Mr. Best was awarded a $300 scholarship from Northwest Professional Educators (NWPE) by Ms. Leah Guelker, NWPE representative, at an April 8 staff meeting.  Mr. Best will utilize the funds to attend the Foundation for Teaching Economics Institute on Environment and Economics this summer.  According to Mr. Best, “Many students are interested in environmental issues. This Institute will provide me with an array of issues to use with my AP Statistics students as well as my Geometry students and provide me with classroom activities that I can tailor to my students needs.”

 
Washington State Loses NCLB Federal Waiver

Last week, the Department of Education announced Washington as the first state to lose its federal waiver for regulatory relief from the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law.
As a result the state’s public school districts will lose control of how they spend a portion of their federal funding (roughly $40 million statewide), and many could be declared failing and possibly subject to state takeover or replacement of most of the staff.

 
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Gets an Update

It only takes a quick visit to the
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards website to see that they’ve been undergoing changes recently.  The website itself has been completely redesigned, making it much easier to find information about their teaching certification.

 
Denver Hires Immigrant Teachers

The Denver Public School District made headlines this week for reaching out to immigrant graduates who came to the United States illegally as children
for their teaching potential. Advocates cite their unique ability to relate to students as a primary goal of this controversial program.

As many as 3.5 million students in classrooms throughout the United States speak English as a second language (ESL). Despite this reality, most schools offer few or no programs that specifically address the unique set of problems these students confront each day in the classroom.
