Department of Education Remains Almost Empty

As the government begins its third week of partial shutdown, the Department of Education (DOE) faces yet another week of limited staffing and minimal productivity. Many Department of Education employees’ phones go straight to voicemail, the website merely announces the furlough, and progress remains stalled.

 
Google+ as a Teacher Tool

As noted earlier, October is Connected Educator Month – a month focusing on helping educators connect and form PLNs (personal learning networks) through the internet.  Much has been written about using popular sites like Twitter and Pinterest as ways for teachers to connect, but often lost in the mix has been Google+.  I find this a tragedy, because Google+ is quickly becoming my favorite way to connect with other educators from across the country.

 
Center for Education Reform Releases New Poll

This week, at the Education Nation Summit, the Center for Education Reform (CER) released a nationwide poll demonstrating that Americans increasingly support more accountability for students and schools, and more power for parents.

 
Research You Shouldn’t Miss: From Field Trips to Adult Skills

A study was released yesterday that’s making big news: US adults score below other developed countries in math, literacy, and problem solving abilities.  Perhaps it’s because the technology we’ve been embracing is distracting us, or because we’re teaching study skills that don’t work, or maybe just because we don’t value our teachers as much.  Maybe if we start taking more field trips to art museums, we might see our skills rise.  All of these topics, and many more, have been addressed in research studies released in the past few months.  Read on to learn more about these studies:

 
Michigan Post Right-to-Work

On March 28, 2013, Michigan's Right-to-Work law went into full effect, finally providing Michigan teachers and other workers the freedom to choose whether they want to be a member of a union. Since its inception, AAE has seen a large increase in Michigan teachers searching for professional benefits without the partisan politics of the Michigan Education Association (MEA). However, due to the mass exodus of members, Michigan union leaders are doing everything in their power to keep workers in the fold.
