Secretary Duncan Ties Education to Economy

When speaking to groups of dedicated educators, often teachers admit feeling disconnected to Washington, D.C. and domestic policy at the federal level. When your day is structured at the local level, the rhetoric of a politician can often go unnoticed, especially on issues seemingly unrelated to education. Interestingly, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan bridged this gap this week with remarks made in Nevada about our education system and its role in the U.S. economy.
 
When it Comes to Professional Development for Teachers, Conducting Research is Key

It's no surprise that the Better Business Bureau (BBB) recently issued a call for consumers to do their research before making holiday purchases. Said Kathy Graham, BBB President and CEO, "By checking prices at several retailers and reading advertisements carefully, consumers can make an educated decision on whether it's worthwhile to stand in line or miss a good night's sleep." Professional development for teachers is no exception. Conducting research on teacher training opportunities allows teachers to make educated decisions on whether it's worthwhile to miss a few days in the classroom or to dedicate four days of summer break to an institute or workshop.

Teacher Evaluation Plans in NCLB Waiver Proposals

With the overhaul of No Child Left Behind taking longer than expected, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and the Obama administration introduced an NCLB waiver plan back in September that would allow states to apply for regulatory relief in exchange for key reforms. In the months following, while 11 states applied for the waivers, over half of the proposals did not outline specific teacher evaluation components.
 
School Districts Selling Ad Space to Raise Revenue

In the wake of the crippling recession and its decimating impact on state and local budgets, school districts across the country are searching for innovative ways of raising funds. In a bizarre turn, districts in states like Colorado, Utah, and New Jersey are selling advertisement space on everything from school buses to report cards. While the ideas will certainly be revenue generating, members of the public are beginning to call the moves inappropriate for the public school setting.
