Poll: Public Wants to See Teacher Evaluations, Performance Pay in California

The battle between teacher union push-back and the call to make public school teacher evaluations available to the public has been a topic of debate for over a year in California. Union officials claim the information should not be available to outsiders, while proponents argue that it is a critical part of creating a culture of transparency and accountability in the public schools. As the debate continues, a new bipartisan poll by the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and the Los Angeles Times reveals that the public not only favors releasing the information to the public, but districts should also factor in student test scores in the creation of teacher evaluations.
 
Teaching Resources for the Thanksgiving Season

Thanksgiving time is almost here and no doubt you’re already knee-deep in planning.  Now, I’m fond of hand-turkeys and trust me when I say I appreciate the classroom Thanksgiving feast, but as a social studies educator, I believe there’s more we gain through teaching about the historical significance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Not only do we have a chance to teach our students something about the history of our country, but it’s also a way we can spark an interest in the subject.

AAE Releases National Membership Survey

Last week, AAE released its annual member survey about key education issues. Polling member teachers from all fifty states, survey results show progressive stances toward education and labor reform, particularly with regard to school choice, technology, attracting new teachers to the workforce, and collective bargaining.

 
Teach for America Program Showing Gains, AAE Member Support

Teach for America (TFA), a non-profit organization that recruits top college graduate to teach in high-need schools after an intensive training has been showing steady gains in student test scores for years in urban districts and states across the county. According to the state card on teacher training released earlier this week, Teach for America participants outperform veteran teachers in Tennessee and recent graduates from traditional colleges of education.

 
AAE Releases 2011 Member Survey

Today the 2011 annual membership survey was released by the Association of American Educators. The survey was conducted this summer, polling AAE members from all 50 states on issues relating to education and labor reform. Survey results showed shifting attitudes toward policies including school choice, technology, attracting new teachers to the workforce, and collective bargaining.
