Post Labor Day Wrap Up

This week we look back on another Labor Day gone, and the hope and promise of a new school year ahead. While most Americans see Labor Day as a long weekend marking the end of summer, it is critical to not only recognize the history and hardship of the workers of over century ago, but recognize the state of labor today.

Let's see if following anecdote takes you on a walk down memory lane:

"I was watching my sister-in-law struggle to write a paper. She wasn't struggling with what to say, but with the physical process of writing. She was sitting at the kitchen counter trying to type a passage into her laptop, her elbow shakily propping open the book from which she was quoting. She was forced to look back and forth from the book to the screen; she'd lose her place; the book would slip and close; the whole thing was terribly awkward. I thought, 'There's really gotta be a better way to do that.' "

A New School Year, Another Reason to Join (and use) Twitter

As we energize a new set of students to tackle curriculum for their betterment, I hope we will do the same for ourselves as educators. And, in true form, I suggest Twitter as the curriculum that we should tackle.

We have often highlighted the social networking website Facebook on the AAE blog. Since its inception in 2004, Facebook has grown from a college photo sharing website to household name and education tool. Currently, 1 in every 13 people on Earth is using the site. With these enormous numbers, a growing percentage of teachers and students are actively using Facebook, raising questions about appropriate use, professional standards, and far-reaching school district policies.
